Utah Police Officer Standards and Training Academy

The Academy includes 16-weeks of paid training at the Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) campus located in Sandy, Utah.

What to Expect

At the Academy, cadets will be tested mentally, physically, and emotionally daily.

Training covers the following:

Basic Training
Firearms Training
Emergency Vehicle Operations
Canine Training
Defensive Tactics
Physical Fitness
Classroom Training
Frequent Exams
Hands-On Practical Training

Commuting and Dorm Eligibility

If you live within 50 miles of the academy you will commute Monday through Friday. If you live further than 50 miles you will be eligible for a dorm room Sunday night through Friday. Cadets staying in the dorms are allowed to return home Friday after class and return to POST Sunday evening. Dorm arrangements can be made for out-of-state new hires. Dorm eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis.

UHP In-House Academy

Following successful graduation from the Academy, Troopers will attend six weeks of UHP-specific in-house training. This training is tailored to UHP Policy, Standards, and advanced tactics.

UHP Field Training Officer Program

UHP's on-the-job training is broken into three phases and spans one year of working on the road. The 18-month probation period is filled with various types of training.
